What I Find Inspiring About This
The custom keyboard world is one of the most design-obsessed communities on the internet. Keycap sets get designed like limited-edition prints — unique colourways, icon sets, custom legends, group buys that take months. People spend serious money and time on objects that are fundamentally about the feeling of using them.
What I find interesting about generating this in Midjourney is the product photography problem it sidesteps. Custom keyboards are usually photographed on desk setups, styled carefully, shot with expensive lenses to capture the texture of the PBT plastic. Here the background is pure atmosphere — pastel clouds, nothing grounding it in reality — and somehow that makes the keyboard feel more like an object of desire, not less.
The vintage icon keycaps are the thing that makes it. Small pictograms on physical keys tap into something very old — the idea that an object should tell you what it does through its surface. That's the same principle behind the best icon design, the best wayfinding, the best stamp illustration. The physicality is different, the logic is the same.
